The interdependence and joint representation of these four elements is fundamental to the realisation of assessment literacy. By this we mean that the possession or demonstration of one element or the absence of one or other elements compromises a person’s level of assessment literacy. For example, technical knowledge of appropriate assessment techniques is of limited merit if one’s implementation of assessment practices is questionable. Similarly, a critical perspective on assessment and its outcomes in the absence of assessment knowledge and practice does little to improve the experiences of students or counter the unhelpful discriminating consequences of assessment. As we have argued, both physical education teachers and students need to be assessment literate. In the next sections we elaborate on the specifics of these four elements of assessment literacy as they relate to physical education teachers and to students.
